“The Jacket That Looked Like an Ancient Figurine”


This jacket began as a one-of-a-kind piece made from a vintage fabric with a bold sun pattern.

Every now and then, I get the urge to collect unusual vintage fabrics—strange colors, unexpected patterns, interesting textures. I think it comes from wondering what kind of garment might come out of them.

The fabric I found that time was only about two meters long, with no possibility of getting more. It was not enough to make one of my usual dresses.

So why did I make this jacket instead?

Honestly, I do not really remember.

Most of my designs do not begin with a detailed reason or concept. I tend to work by instinct—something simply feels right, and I start making it.

When the sun-pattern off-shoulder jacket was finished, my wife’s first reaction was that it reminded her of an ancient Japanese figurine.

But once she actually put it on, she immediately changed her mind and said, “It is actually so cute.”

That one reaction made the whole process feel worthwhile.

Thankfully, the original one-of-a-kind piece quickly found a home. That made me want to bring the design to more people, and eventually led to the BLACK DENIM OFF SHOULDER JACKET.

It may look bold at first, but in black denim it is surprisingly easy to style.
