“From Teenage Memories to a Parka Dress”


I had wanted to make a hooded dress for years. I drew the idea again and again, but somehow it never made it as far as the pattern stage.

Then OASIS announced their reunion, and suddenly it felt like the right moment.

I have loved OASIS since high school, and I even went to see them live. I always thought Liam Gallagher looked especially cool performing in anorak-style jackets.

That image pushed me to finally start making the dress.

My first version had a defined waist, but it did not feel right. It was missing the relaxed confidence I had in mind. One day, stuck on the design, I put on OASIS’s “Roll with It,” got on my bicycle, and rode along the river. Somewhere along the way, it suddenly became clear: the waist did not need to be emphasized.

I went straight back to the studio and started again. After several pattern revisions, I added the details that make it feel like MASAHIRO OKUNO—tucks, drape, and a generous amount of fabric through the hem.

I always have the same thought when I calculate how much fabric I have used: maybe this is too much. But I do not want to sacrifice that feeling of beauty and excitement just to use less fabric. If I did, there would be little point in me making it.

Something I loved in my teenage years eventually found its way into a dress many years later.

I would be very happy if this parka dress became one of those pieces people remember as a MASAHIRO OKUNO classic.
